March 3 Game Previews
MIA @ NYK: Set your lineups early for this 1:00 matinee. Miami goes for a 14th consecutive win and the Knicks — already 2-0 vs. the Heat this season — would love to snap that streak on national TV. Tyson Chandler will be tough to stop, Carmelo Anthony will need his very best and Raymond Felton scored 27 the last time these teams met. The visitors have a pretty good Big Three as well. It should be excellent entertainment.
OKC @ LAC: The second half of the ABC doubleheader might be even better. It’s a battle for second place in the West, and the Clippers are on a four-game roll while the Thunder have lost their last three road games. The superstars on both teams deserve plenty of attention, but it’s the L.A. bench that makes them so hard to beat. Jamal Crawford, Eric Bledsoe, Matt Barnes and Lamar Odom all contribute in different ways.
MEM @ ORL: Time for Memphis to begin another win streak. They had won eight in a row before a tough loss in Miami on Friday and have a big edge over the Magic in talent, experience and motivation. Zach Randolph (ankle) may not be 100%, so Ed Davis could get some extra run and Marc Gasol figures to have another big night. The hot hand for Orlando has been Tobias Harris, but the Grizzlies play great defense, so don’t expect too much.
CHA @ SAC: The Kings have lost seven of eight, yet they are the overwhelming favorite. That’s how bad Charlotte is. They scored just 68 points in Utah and have nobody playing particularly well. Against the undisciplined Sacramento defense, a few Bobcats might get some numbers — you can use Kemba Walker, Byron Mullens and Gerald Henderson — but the home team should romp and DeMarcus Cousins could go for 30 and 20 if he feels like it.
PHI @ WAS: For a while there, the Wizards were playing with passion and energy. John Wall may have hit the fatigue wall last week, though he bounced back a little on Friday. Backcourt partner Bradley Beal is in a fantastic groove; I had dismissed him early in the season as ‘only’ a scorer but he contributes in every fantasy category. Nene (shoulder) and Martell Webster (abdominal strain) are iffy, making Trevor Ariza a decent spot play.
DAL @ HOU: This isn’t just for east Texas bragging rights. Houston owns the final playoff spot in the West, and Dallas is five games back with 24 to play. That’s desperation time for the Mavs and Dirk Nowitzki. Houston is tough on their home floor, but James Harden is battling some knee soreness and Jeremy Lin played through an ankle injury on Friday. You may not know the name Donatas Motiejunas (spelled like it sounds) but the 7-foot Lithuanian rookie is the Rockets’ starting PF. This is home-and-home that concludes on Wednesday; a split seems fair.
DET @ SAS: It’s never easy to predict a Gregg Popovich rotation. At least until Gary Neal (hamstring) returns, some PG minutes will go to Patrick Mills and Nando De Colo, but Manu Ginobili might become the main playmaker. With Boris Diaw (back) likely out again, DeJuan Blair is worth using in some formats, and Tim Duncan will shoulder a heavy load up front. Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight are the best plays for the Pistons, who are unlikely to fashion an upset.
CHI @ IND: This would be an even better game is the Bulls hadn’t played last night. The extra day of rest and home-court advantage set up nicely for the Pacers, who have won the previous two meetings. Both teams are defense-oriented, so don’t expect a high score, but Paul George and David West are must-starts. Danny Granger played just 9:34 in a back-to-back on Friday, sitting out the second half, and will see more minutes tonight.
ATL @ LAL: Which Atlanta team will show up? If it’s the one that committed 21 turnovers and gave away a game in Phoenix, this will be a blowout loss. The Hawks who had won four straight prior to that debacle, averaging 110 points per game, would give the Lakers more of a battle. Al Horford has never been better, so Dwight Howard needs to play well. Kobe Bryant is a man on a mission; getting to .500 with a W tonight is the next step toward a playoff berth.
