The NBA futures market has opened up across many different sports books and shops, not only in Las Vegas but also across the offshore markets as well. In this column, I am going to list all of the different odds and current opportunities between these shops to see if there are any differences worth noting and where the biggest discrepancies lie.
Here are the two Las Vegas Sports Books that we will be comparing: The Las Vegas Hilton and William Hill; William Hill is the line originator for sports books such as Hooter’s, Ellis Island, The D Las Vegas, Terrible’s and Riviera.
Here are some examples of teams with varying odds between sports books and a few differences to notice between the opportunities.
1. The leader in the clubhouse in terms of odds at every sports book is obviously the Miami Heat, and you can find the Heat anywhere between +175 and +200. So at any sports book, you currently cannot find odds on the defending two-time NBA champion at any higher than 2/1. The question becomes, at any moment this season will the Heat have odds better than 2/1? If they fall behind in a playoff series or if they somehow start 3-3 (which could happen with Nets, Clippers, Bulls in the first six games), the only chance Miami has to have odds better than 2/1 for bettors will only come in May or June.
2. If you want to bet on teams like the Magic, Bobcats, Suns, Sixers or Bucks, the place to go is the Las Vegas Hilton, which is giving you by far the best odds on the worst teams. If you have to play offshore for the worst teams in the league, 5Dimes seems to be your “best bet” with odds a bit better than the other three sports books.
3. The two teams that have received the most offseason buzz have been the Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets. To receive the best odds as a bettor for both of those teams, you probably should have placed a bet earlier in the summer, but if you decided to wait until now, the best place to show would be William Hill, which has the Nets at 14/1 and the Rockets at 16/1.
4. One of the more interesting teams in terms of different odds between sports books is the Los Angeles Lakers. Sans LVH, the Lakers are listed between 33/1 and 44/1, but at LVH the Lakers are listed at 100/1, which to be honest is probably closer to what their true odds should be. So if you are shopping to take a future on the Lakers, a trip to LVH makes a ton of sense.
