The Magic announced Friday that Oladipo took an inadvertent elbow to the face during a practice drill. The second-year guard will undergo a surgical procedure Saturday. There is no timetable for his return.
Oladipo already was nursing a sprained MCL suffered in preseason that had prevented him from playing in any exhibition games. He returned to practice Monday, and the Magic were hoping that Oladipo could have played in the team’s preseason finale Friday vs. Dallas.
That is now out of the question. Orlando opens its season Tuesday at New Orleans in the non-TNT game.
The second overall pick in the 2013 draft, Oladipo finished second in Rookie of the Year voting to Philadelphia guard Michael Carter-Williams. He averaged 13.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 80 games, including 44 starts.
As a rookie, Oladipo was sometimes stuck behind the veteran backcourt of Jameer Nelson and Arron Afflalo. Both have moved on, and Oladipo was expected to start alongside rookie Elfrid Payton in the backcourt.
Options at shooting guard include veterans Willie Green and Ben Gordon and youngster Evan Fournier.
