It hasn’t been the smoothest ride as the new head coach of the Sacramento Kings for George Karl, but Monday’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder was a good reminder about the impact he has had over a very illustrious career.
The victory – the Kings’ 14th win of the season – gave Karl his 1,156th win, moving him past the great Phil Jackson to put him in sole possession of fifth place on the all-time NBA coaching wins list. Karl is just 65 wins away from matching Jerry Sloan for the third most wins of all-time. It’s an amazing feat for the coach who has overcome battles with cancer to be in this position.
Since taking the job in Sacramento, Karl has had issues with some players – DeMarcus Cousins in particular – as well as the front office. Despite being the coach of the team for less than half the season, his job security has already been in question a number of times. Still, Monday was a day to celebrate and Cousins was happy to congratulate his coach:
