OK, I’ve gotten your attention.

I am only joking.

This series should be a joke in and of itself, with the best team in the entire NBA taking on the team that finished with the 18th-best record in the league.

Screen Shot 2013-04-15 at 7.41.17 PMIn all walks of life, in tragedy there is opportunity. So today, as we mourn the loss of innocent lives in Boston, we should all take a moment to send thoughts and prayers to those affected by the horrific events that unfolded yesterday.

We can use the tragedy as an opportunity to unite and come together.

On any level, sports is a unifying force that has helped bridge economic, social, geographical and political divisions among citizens of the world, and the NBA has become a melting pot and the epitome of this idea.

All acts of terror are obviously reprehensible, but that this particular attack occurred during an event that featured unification at its finest—and on a day when Boston celebrates the beginning of the American Revolution—was especially unnerving for me, personally.

Klay ThompsonLets talk about the Golden State Warriors.

How many people, before the season began, thought that this team could make the playoffs without a healthy Andrew Bogut anchoring its defense? If the number reads more than zero, then we have some liars in our hands because lets face it: no one thought that the Warriors would be good enough in the Western Conference if they couldn’t play defense. Without Bogut’s availability, there was no reason to assume that they would suddenly be able to get stops with a core of Stephen Curry, David Lee, Klay Thompson and a couple of rookies in the starting lineup.

Yet, that’s what happened in the first half of the season. They defended and rebounded the way winning teams would. Maybe it was fluke, because as the season went on, it all reverted back to past years, as they allowed anyone and everyone to shoot freely and attack the rim at will. They limped into the All-Star break with a five-game losing streak, and lost 10-of-13 games to fall back in the standings. It was hard-pressed to find a team that played worse defense in the second half of the season than the Warriors.

louisvilleNow that Rick Pitino and his Louisville Cardinals have captured the NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Championship, we can get back to focusing on the big boys—many of whom have some big, big problems. Chris Sheridan gave us a rather interesting take on 10 unanswered questions that persist as we head down the stretch run of the season, and Chris Bernucca gave us a nice piece on separating the playoff contenders from pretenders.

I am still have a very difficult time comprehending are how the Los Angeles Lakers are on the outside looking in with only five games remaining in their regular season. The Lakers are to the point where they have to depend on the Utah Jazz to lose at least one more game for them to make the playoffs.

Who’d have thunk it?

Josh Smith 1Busted brackets and baseball.

That is what most sports fans are thinking about at the beginning of April.

While the great majority of you guys and gals have been distraught over not correctly picking Wichita State to reach the NCAA’s Final Four, many have overlooked the fact that some of the NBA’s playoff races are getting more and more interesting with each passing week. And a bunch of our pending free agents have something to do with that.

Josh Smith and his Atlanta Hawks have overachieved this season and still have a shot at catching the Brooklyn Nets for the fourth seed in the East. But J-Smoove was not this week’s highest riser. That distinction belongs to a small of very small stature.
