Bernucca: Future murky for Lakers, biggest underachievers in NBA history

Dwight HowardBefore Game 4 of their Western Conference first-round series against the San Antonio Spurs, the Los Angeles Lakers handed out white towels to fans at the Staples Center.

Apparently, someone in the marketing department didn’t understand symbolism. By halftime, those towels had become flags of surrender for the Lakers, the biggest underachieving team in the history of the NBA.

Dwight Howard offered his own symbolism, figuratively throwing in the towel midway through the third quarter. Unwilling to grit his teeth and bang and bump his way through all of another telling, embarrassing loss, he got himself ejected, starting his offseason of uncertainty with an hour’s headstart on his teammates.

Dwight Howard, human surrender flag. Yeah, there’s the sort of toughness you want to build a franchise around.

Did fans throw some hate messages towards Boston Celtics forward Courtney Lee?

After suffering a 110-100 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, their second consecutive loss and seventh loss in the last nine games, Lee shared his words of frustration on twitter for whatever impatience he may have heard from writers or fans. Here is what he had to say:

Don't trip about these games we want to win but we're short handed, knock the rust off in time for this post season run!!!

It may sound like an excuse, but Lee has a point: Kevin Garnett, the backbone of the Celtics defense, has been out for the last six games. Paul Pierce also missed Monday’s game due to personal reasons. Without the two core players of the team, a victory against any team on the road is going to be a difficult task.

The bigger concern for Lee and Boston should be this: the loss brought the Milwaukee Bucks within 1 1/2 games of the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. If the Celtics continue to falter at this rate, they may end up relinquishing their current position to end up as the eighth seed, and that means a first-round matchup against the Miami Heat. Certainly, they want to avoid that at all cost.

It’s been a roller-coaster week in my daily fantasy hoops (mis)adventures. We start every Monday with $100, and seem to have alternated between winning and losing nights.
