Since many of our readers are likely to be unfamiliar with me, a few words of introduction are in order as I take over for Kent Williams. I got involved in daily fantasy sports a few years ago, entering daily baseball contests at various sites, including DraftStreet. I had done analytical research and writing about baseball for well over a decade and found that creating daily fantasy sports lineups was a natural extension of that work. Since then I’ve done similar work on the NFL, both here at Sheridan Hoops and at Sports Leagues Daily – and now I have turned my attention to the NBA.

Regardless of the sport, my daily fantasy preparations have three phases:

It was an enjoyable walk down DraftStreet on Wednesday. Clay Buchholz was my best bet and Hiram Burgos my longshot pitcher. Using both of them and Lance Lynn produced 28.45 points for $33,501 in salary. While I didn’t have Mike Napoli (21.25) and Mike Trout (10.75) was my only hitter above 7.25 points, all the bats contributed something and I won a 330-man GPP. In addition to the $135 top prize, my other two lineups finished sixth ($25) and 23rd ($5) for a $165 return on my six bucks.

It’s another full slate of baseball action on Wednesday, with double the opportunities to win some cash. Five of the 15 games begin before 7:05 and the only way to use anyone from those ten teams is to join leagues that close at 12:40 Eastern. If you like “evening” players you can use them twice.

The best thing about a wacky Monday in MLB is that it’s over. The craziest game was in Oakland, where Yoenis Cespedes tied it up in the bottom of the ninth for the second day in a row, then it took ten extra innings to decide. Brandon Moss won it with a homer in the 19th after 6 ½ hours of baseball.

With “only” a dozen ballgames, it’s a relatively quiet schedule on Monday, all leagues closing at 7:05. Weather, a prime consideration this month, is forecast to be no worse than “partly cloudy with a 40% chance of rain” so we will assume no cancellations.
