SH Blog: Thunder interested in Jimmer Fredette?

As the offseason continues to wind down, keep checking our index and analysis of every team’s offseason moves.

And here’s all the latest news from around the world of basketball:
  • Sam Amico of Fox Sports has a piece of Thunder news via Sulia: “Speaking of Kings, Jimmer Fredette would love to go someplace where someone other than just DeMarcus Cousins will pass him the ball. Thunder would love to pry Fredette away from Kings as replacement for Derek Fisher. Kevin Durant is a Jimmer fan.”
  • Earlier, John Telich of FOX 8 in Cleveland reported that the Cavs were likely to buy out Omri Casspi.  However, that was contradicted later by several sources, including Mary Schmitt Boyer of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, who tweeted: “Source tells The Plain Dealer there is no deal yet with Alonzo Gee and the team is not considering buying out Omri Casspi.”
  • Joey Dorsey: "3 #NBA teams offered me 1-year deals but I felt Olympiakos was a good decision & I went with my heart." via @
    @IAmDPick
    David Pick
  • John Reid of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that the Hornets have extended coach Monty Williams’ contract: “Hornets Coach Monty Williams agreed to a four-year contract extension Saturday that will keep him with the team with the team through 2016. Before the agreement was reached, Williams had one year remaining on his existing deal that included a team option for a fourth year. Although the Hornets were out of playoff contention by January before finishing with a 21-45 record last season, Williams instilled a work ethic that kept the team competitive down the stretch despite being ravaged by injuries.”
  • HoopsWorld’s Joel Brigham talked to veteran Corey Maggette, who is about to start his 13th NBA season and his first as a Piston: “Either way, he’s grateful for a fresh start, even this late in his career. ‘It’s year 13 and still counting,’ Maggette told HOOPSWORLD. ‘It’s a new team and we have a lot of good young talent there.’ … However much he may play this year, Maggette is looking forward to helping these kids grow. ‘[I want to] help out the young guys,” he said. “I was with the team for the last couple of weeks, training with the guys and getting familiar with them. We’ve got a great nucleus, a lot of good people there. I’m just looking forward to the season.’ “
  • Donna Ditota of the Syracuse Post-Standard talked with Andray Blatche, who is looking to catch on with an NBA team after being amnestied by the Wizards and going unclaimed.  ” ‘It was very tough,’ Blatche said Friday. ‘It seemed like the Wizards had a string of bad luck with the (Gilbert Arenas) gun situation and so on. Me getting amnesty this year wasn’t more of a hurt to me, it was more of a blessing to me. I’m looking at that as giving me a chance to go somewhere else and revive my career and become the player I used to be.’ To that end, Blatche’s mother, Angela Oliver, helped facilitate a connection with John Lucas, who is based in Houston. Lucas, the former NBA guard, coach and general manager, has built a reputation for resuscitating ailing NBA careers. Lucas said he looked at Blatche and saw a familiar reflection. ‘That was me,’ he said, ’26 years ago in the league.’ “
  • Another former Wizard, Javale McGee, is also working with a former NBA player in the Houston area, writes Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post: “McGee is a perpetual blocker with eager, elongated arms, similar to Hakeem Olajuwon, who was also 7 feet, also 250 pounds, also wore No. 34 and whom, on that very night, blocked eight (yes, eight) Sacramento shots for the Rockets. While Olajuwon was a perennial all-star, McGee is still trying to make his first All-Star Game. And so, the Nuggets center is spending some of his summer at the home of Hakeem, which for McGee is, pun intended, a dream. ‘It’s definitely an honor to be working with him,’ McGee said. McGee has spent a couple of weeks on Olajuwon’s ranch near Houston, where Denver teammate Kenneth Faried is expected to work out as well this month.”
  • Today’s recommended reading comes from Pete Thamel of the New York Times (congrats to Pete on his new gig at SI), who has a fantastic story about former Virginia prep star Jonathan Hargett, who is currently serving the last few months of a five-year prison sentence. Here’s a quick teaser, and be sure to click through to read the full piece: “From the playgrounds of Richmond, Va., to the highest levels of international basketball, the exploits of Jonathan Hargett still resonate. Amar’e Stoudemire, a high school teammate, has called Hargett the best player he has played with at any level. Carmelo Anthony, a summer league teammate when both were in high school, vividly recalls Hargett, a frenetic 5-foot-11 guard with a 44-inch vertical leap and skills that evoked comparisons to Allen Iverson.”

SH Blog: Andrew Bynum leaning towards staying with 76ers, Derrick Rose opens up about knee injury

We have covered and linked you to Dwight Howard stories as much as anyone could possibly want to read about him since the blockbuster trade that sent him to Los Angeles, so Andrew Bynum – the other major star of the trade – will lead the topic of discussion today. Be sure to read up on Jon Marks’ column about Bynum’s welcome party, as well as how Bynum feels about joining the 76ers and what Kareem Abdul Jabbar thinks of his former student below:

  • Kareem Abdul Jabbar talked about the acquisition of Dwight Howard and was rather critical of Andrew Bynum, from Mark Medina of Los Angeles Times: ”Dwight is very committed to playing and winning,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “Andrew has been up and down on that issue. There are times he wants to play, do a great job and he goes out and does it. Then there are other times where it seems like he’s not focused.”…”When I first started working with him, he was eager to learn,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “He appreciated me shortening the learning curve. Once he figured he did everything he wanted to do in terms of learning, he didn’t want me to bother him constantly going over the fundamentals.”… Abdul-Jabbar said he was unsure if Bynum would thrive in a larger role in Philadelphia: “It’s up to him to determine how much of a leader he wants to be and how to make that happen on the court. Some people like that position and adjust to it naturally. Other people aren’t comfortable with it.”
  • Bynum has already enjoyed his new team so much that he is already leaning towards staying with 76ers long term, from Amick: “New Philly center Andrew Bynum breaking future free agency news in his presser. When asked about his free agency next summer, he says, “To be honest man, my first experience here has been so great (that) I’m really leaning towards making this my home (fans who are at press conference go nuts). I’m not a guy who tries to be all around and have a lot of teams on my belt, so I don’t know man. It’s crazy. That’s really the answer man. I’m really leaning towards being able to stay here and making it my home.”
  • For the first time since suffering a devastating knee injury, Derrick Rose opened up about the experience, from Aggrey Sam of CSN Chicago: ”I remember it,” he recalled. “I remember everything. I remember jumping in the air and coming back down, and just that popping sound. I felt it actually tear when I laid all the way out and it just let go. ”I didn’t have that that much pain after that. In the beginning I did, but I didn’t want to yell or anything. When that happened, all I could think about was people just talking. You could hear the whole arena, people just whispering all around — one of the things, like ‘Not again. Come on, man. First game back. We had the win’ — and I was just hoping [it was] nothing serious,” Rose continued. “Then, we got to the hospital, got in the MRI machine, the whole time praying. ”Dr. [Brian] Cole, the Bulls doctor [who also performed the subsequent surgery], came up to me and told me it was torn. I couldn’t believe it. That’s the closest thing to death, the closest to death I’ve got to right there, where it just seemed like the wind and everything was taken out [of me].”
  • Jim Boeheim stated that LeBron James may have surpassed Michael Jordan as the best player he has ever seen, and Ken Berger of CBS Sports took issue with the thought: “There’s nothing technically inaccurate in what Boeheim said — except the part about “Michael Jordan-type skills.” Nobody who has ever lived possessed Michael Jordan-type skills, with the lone exception of Michael Jordan. Not even Kobe Bryant, who is the closest I’ve seen in terms of a perimeter/midrange game since I’ve been watching the NBA… But to suggest that, after one championship at age 27, James has surpassed Jordan as the greatest player a renowned basketball authority has ever seen? It is both silly and predictable — and unnecessary. Bryant enters his 17th season in a few months, and only by virtue of two brilliant acquisitions by Mitch Kupchak appears to have one more legitimate shot at a sixth title to equal Jordan. Seventeen years. A lot can, and will happen for (and to) LeBron if he plays that long. Let’s just enjoy his talent and see how it plays out, shall we?”
  • Meanwhile, Michael Jordan detailed and reiterated why the 1992 Dream Team was notably better than the 2012 USA Team, from Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated: ”In [terms] of how the game is played from an offensive standpoint and a defense standpoint — from a team standpoint — I feel like we were much more solid defensively. We could definitely guard the perimeter and force them to penetrate to shot-blockers, which I felt like would’ve made a big difference with this team in 2012. They only had one shot-blocker. Granted, I know LeBron [James] and some of those guys can still block shots. It’s not the same defense and it’s not the same intensity.” ”Granted, I think those guys are much more athletic than maybe we were at that particular time, but I’d like to think that we were a little bit smarter and well-groomed about playing at that level of basketball,” Jordan said. “So in all honesty, I don’t think we would’ve had any problems with them, as much as they think they probably would’ve given us a lot more difficulties. I think our team would’ve been a lot better in terms of all-around basketball game.”
  • Stan Van Gundy shared his thoughts about why Dwight Howard may have went back and forth about staying with the Magic, from Steven Cuce of Sports Radio Interviews: “Well, I think it confuses everyone. It confuses all of us. I was a little bit surprised at the time. Look I think Dwight Howard is a guy, who likes his teammates, enjoys the camaraderie of the locker room and he’s gotta realize you are in season making that decision and the guys you are with every single day are your teammates. It’s also…the timing of it is we were also out on the road at that time and just played San Antonio, so it’s not like he’s going home after practice or something else. He is with his teammates all day and sort of got wrapped up in that and just decided hey I want to…I might as well just finish this season in Orlando and he opted in, but at the same time I don’t think his desire to leave at some point ever left him, so it was more I think to finish the year in Orlando.”
  • Apparently, Greg Oden is not as ready to return to the NBA for next season as reported through the internet, from David Hughes of The Tribune-Star: “An unrestricted free agent, the 7-foot Oden disputed Internet reports that he wants to play for the reigning NBA champion Miami Heat and that he intends to play next season. These rumors were fueled by a si.com report that quoted his agent, Mike Conley Sr., saying Oden “has talked about Miami.” Oden’s denial doesn’t mean he is ruling out a return in 2012-13, but he stressed that it’s unlikely. “I would love to play [in 2012-13], but I’m not going to rush anything,” he said Thursday. “I need to take a year off. What I told Mike was ‘Look, I want to get back with a team. I want to play. If there’s a chance that later on in the [NBA] year, if I feel good or if I’m healthy enough to play, I would love to play this year.’ That’s the conversation we had. I think some people kinda blew that up and took his words and kinda changed them around. I know I need to get healthy first before I do anything.”
The Rockets have waived c/f Josh Harrelson, a source said. Needed to make a cut to add Delfino. He'll put the roster at 20 players.

  • Hakeem Olajuwon has been working with JaVale McGee, and is highly impressed by the agility of the center, from Mark Berman of My Fox Houston: “No question, I see him as another star,” Olajuwon said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. “That guy should dominate the league. ”He has tremendous talent. I give him all these moves and he can finish and he’s already skilled. So now just show him how to use that skill to (get) to the next level.”… ”McGee is incredible because he’s not just a seven-footer, he’s skilled,” Olajuwon said. “He’s very agile. ”Most of my moves are designed from a shot-blockers perspective. I am a shot blocker. What are the moves most difficult for a shot blocker? I’m coming from inside out. This move is very difficult for a shot blocker to block.” Olajuwon believes what he has to offer fits McGee’s game. ”The moves that we work on are not for a stiff big guy,” Olajuwon said. “With him he’s agile. The move flows. So I’m excited to see what he’s going to do this year.”

  • Baron Davis is somehow hoping to return at some point in the upcoming season, according to Eric Pincus of Hoops World: “While Davis, a free agent of the New York Knicks, is currently recovering from a significant knee injury, he looked trim and healthy considering how badly he was hurt. “I’m feeling good, getting there,” Davis said on Sunday.  “A lot of rehab.  A lot of rehab. My summer is just consisting of rehabbing, focusing in on this foundation and these kids and doing as much good as I possibly can with my time off.” A source close to Davis said he intends to return to the league this season. Given he tore the ACL and MCL of his right knee back in May, a recovery any time sooner than a full year may be a stretch but Davis is committed to getting back in the league.  It just might take another season for that to happen.”
  • Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa thinks if her husband is going to spend time away from her and her kids, he’d better be winning championships every year, from Vanessa Grigoriadis of NYMag: “I love basketball. And I know what goes on behind the scenes, so I have a different perspective on things, but still, I do. I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”

SH Blog: Dwight Howard could be traded as soon as Friday, Kobe Bryant says he is the best post player on Team USA

“Dwightmare” made its triumphant return on Thursday when Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported a possible four-team trade, but the situation may soon be coming to a close. Find out what went down in today’s news, along with some entertaining video clips below:

  • The four-team trade involving Dwight Howard could happen as soon as Friday, according to ESPN: “A four-team trade that would send Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers is “very close” to happening and could be agreed upon Friday, league sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard. In the proposed four-team deal, sources told Broussard that Howard and Denver Nuggets forward Al Harrington would go to Los Angeles, Lakers forward Pau Gasol and Nuggets guard Arron Afflalo would go to the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers guard Andre Iguodalawould go to Denver, and Lakers center Andrew Bynum would go to Philadelphia. A league source told ESPNLosAngeles.com’s Ramona Shelburne that the pieces in the potential trade are still very fluid and that Gasol has been in and out of the talks. The source, though, said the deal still is very close to happening and could go down Friday morning. Sources told Broussard that Philadelphia has not spoken to Bynum or his representatives and has no assurances he will sign a long-term extension with the club. ”The Sixers are willing to take a shot (without Bynum’s commitment),” one source said.”
  • Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated explains why it would be difficult for the Magic to acquire assets for Pau Gasol if they were to trade for him, and that the Rockets can readily offer better assets: “Orlando has engaged in extensive talks with Houston that remain alive as well, and a source with knowledge of the Rockets’ latest proposal said it would afford the Magic more assets to their liking than the potential four-team trade. With Orlando looking to clear salary cap space and rebuild via the draft, some have surmised that, if the four-team deal goes through, the Magic could trade Gasol for younger prospects or more draft picks at a later time. But given the current NBA landscape, with the new collective bargaining agreement and the devastating luxury tax set to kick in after next season, the interest in a 32-year-old forward with a combined $38 million on his deal for the next two seasons will likely be limited, if only because of the immense payroll implications.”
  • Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports broke the initial news about the Howard deal, and added the following about Jason Richardson:
Orlando's Jason Richardson has been significant name in 4-way talks too, sources tell Y! There's a scenario where he goes with Howard to LA.

  • Kobe Bryant talked about how he is the best post-player on Team USA and that everyone wants to reach his level, from Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today: “When a news reporter suggested Bryant was the best U.S offensive player in the low post other than center Tyson Chandler, Bryant stopped the question. ”No, no, no,” Bryant said. “Not other than Tyson Chandler. I’m the best post player on this team, period. Tyson Chandler is not in that conversation.” Asked what it’s like to be the old guy on the team, Bryant said, “I’m where everybody wants to get to. I just happen to be still playing.” ”Can you learn anything from these young guys?” he was asked. Bryant: “No.” ”You know everything?” Bryant: “I don’t know if I know it all, but I know more than they do.”
  • Bryant was accused of cheating on his wife (again) with swimmer Stephanie Rice, according to Larry Brown Sports: “Liz Cambage became the first woman to dunk at the Olympics, and then she became the first athlete to go on record calling out Kobe Bryant and Stephanie Ricefor having an inappropriate relationship. Things between Bryant and Rice started cooking when the NBA MVP visited the Australian swim team before the Games began since the teams were staying at the same hotel in Manchester. Rice and Bryant took some pictures, including the one seen above which the swimmer shared on Twitter and Instagram, along with the message “First piccy with a “star” going to be hard to beat… Kobe.” Rice was also pretty excited about an autographed pair of sneakers Kobe gave her, and he received some signed swim caps as part of the trade. Fast forward to the second week of the Olympics and the closeness between the two continued. Bryant was spotted at the velodrome on Tuesday watching some cycling along with Rice”

  • Carmelo Anthony has been nursing a sore hamstring while playing for Team USA, from ESPN New York: “Carmelo Anthony has reportedly been playing with a slight amount of pain throughout the Olympics. According to the New York Daily News, Anthony has been dealing with a sore hamstring for the past “several days.” But Anthony told the paper that the injury is minor. ”I’m fine,” Anthony said on Thursday. “It’s nothing serious.” Anthony has been one of Team USA’s top scorers in the Olympics, averaging 17.4 points per game (second to Kevin Durant’s 18.6 ppg). In what appears to be a precautionary measure, the Knicks have sent a trainer to London to monitor Anthony’s injury.”
  • Tim Grover’s Attack Athletics gym is headed into foreclosure, and Michael Jordan will lose plenty of money as a result, according to Andrew Greif of Dime Magazine: “Tim Grover made his name on makingMichael Jordan, well, Michael Jordan. As a trainer he was one of the elite because he trained the very best. But going in business together on a West Chicago basketball-focused gym apparently hasn’t been as successful for wooing the regular customer. According to the Chicago Tribune, Attack Athletics is headed into foreclosure because it owes more than $12 million from an initial $9 million loan — and both Jordan and Michael Finley are on the hook as creditors, too. MJ is in for $1.5 million, the report said, while leaving Finley’s investment unspecified.

Tweet of the Day: Ty Lawson

“@: @ you ready to bring a championship to Denver?”yes

Ty Lawson

Tweet of the Day went to Ty Lawson, who took the time to answer some fan questions and declared that he is ready to bring a championship to Denver.

Lawson had a breakout season in his third year in the league, averaging 16.4 points and 6.6 assists as a full-time starter, and showed great promise in the first round of the playoffs against the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games.

That said, a championship for next season or the near future seems unlikely, given the fact that a number of teams in the Western Conference such as the Lakers, Clippers and Mavericks have all upgraded their rosters over the summer. Other powerhouse teams like the Thunder and Spurs aren’t going to suddenly disappear either.

Aside from re-signing JaVale McGee, the Nuggets have not been overly active during the offseason. The team has a promising core of young talent including Kenneth Faried and Danilo Gallinari, but a young core is hardly the recipe to win a championship. If Lawson is serious about his aspirations, he will likely have to ascend to another level to have a crack at a ring.

Tweet of the Night goes to JaVale McGee, who had an emotional night with his mother after signing a big contract with the Denver Nuggets. Marc J. Spears has the details: “The Denver Nuggets have re-signed free-agent center JaVale McGee. The four-year contract is worth $44 million, a league source told Yahoo! Sports. McGee averaged 11.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 61 games with the Nuggets and Washington Wizards last season. After failing to live up to his potential in Washington, McGee had two impressive double-double games for the Nuggets against the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs.”

McGee, who is known more for his regular appearances on Shaqtin’ a Fool than his play on the basketball court, proved to be a valuable commodity in the postseason against the Lakers as he went toe-to-toe against Andrew Bynum and averaged 8.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks in 26 minutes.

The big contract most assuredly makes him a big part of the Nuggets future moving forward. He is slated to workout with Hakeem Olajuwon, who has helped develop the post game of a number of notable NBA players. McGee has built a reputation as a tantalizing talent with maturity issues over the years with the young core of the Washington Wizards, but could maximize his potential under the tutelage of coach George Karl with the Nuggets. That said, did he ask his mother if he could take a picture of her crying?
