Pau-Gasol4The difference between talent and skill is one of the most misunderstood concepts of the NBA – and sports in general, for that matter.

Talent you have naturally. Every player in the NBA has some form of natural talent. But skill can only be developed by hours and hours of working on your craft.

10,000 hours, as Malcolm Gladwell has famously professed.

This is as true for individuals as it is teams.

Fantasy Spin: Wizards Win Again; Hobbled LeBron Triple-Doubles

Sure, LeBron James had a triple-double on one good leg, but the top fantasy basketball story is Chris Sheridan finishing 12th out of 18 in the $22 Challenge. Thinking the Pistons might show up to defend their home court, he used two potential bargains — Jason Maxiell and Viacheslav Kravtsov — who did very little. “PrincessDuckling” won the $180 first prize, “tommyboy42609” earned $112 for second and “mr92,” the only person who doubled his chances of winning by entering two teams, finished third and fourth for a total of $108. My team came seventh and won the $5 bonus for beating the expert.

We have folded the Week 18 Planner into the Spin today, and our Depth Chart has been updated to reflect the less-than-spectacular results of the trade deadline. Five pages of fantasy fun begins with what happened last night and what might happen today.

Sheridan: Five Potential Trades That Make Sense

We are 48 hours away from the NBA trade deadline. Deals are being discussed, deals are going to happen, and deals are going to fall through.

So expect to hear a lot of financial gobbledygook on Thursday night and Friday morning as NBA executives explain the moves they made.

For athletes, statements are like free throws: you can make all you want because nobody is playing defense.

On Monday, Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol lined up on opposite ends of the court – Howard with Stephen A. Smith and Gasol with T.J. Simers of the L.A. Times — and took some freebies. Only, they just weren’t physically at the free throw line.

Let’s take a look at what they said, and what they were saying
