“Even without a team. I’m still a coach.”
That’s how Bobby Gonzalez opened this interview with Tamara Holder on Sports Court on FOX, and that is the truth. Yes, Gonzo is spending a season as a columnist, video analyst and radio guest for this site, but the endgame here is for Gonzo to land a job in the NBA, helping lead the team that is smart enough to hire him to an NBA championship.
I like to tell people that Gonzo has forgotten more about coaching than many current NBA assistant coaches and scouts actually know, but the truth of the matter is that Gonzo hasn’t forgotten a thing about coaching. He is looking for the right fit, and he has no interest in joining a team that is not interested in thinking out of the box.
He’s a straight shooter, Gonzo is.
And in this day and age, straight shooters are sometimes viewed with a jaundiced eye. People have tried to put Gonzo in a box and say “he’s merely a college coach” or “he’s merely a great recruiter” or “he is a little too outspoken and brash for our tastes.” All of that is a bunch of bunk.
Gonzo isn’t afraid to shoot from the hip. And as I have learned since bringing him aboard a little more than a year ago, he’s quite good at shooting from the lip. You’ll be seeing more of him in the near future, whether on TV or back on the sidelines where he belongs.
